Book Review: The Sunshine When She's Gone

I am very particular when it comes to books and reading nonfiction. I tend to stick to mysteries, with female sleuths. But every once in a while, a plot catches my interest. The Sunshine When She's Gone, is one such plot.

Thea Goodman's debut novel features that BIG event in every young couple's life. . .the arrival of a baby. Something I thought was very poignant, was how the characters referred to their lives before and after; meaning before the baby was born and after the birth. The story is about John and Veronica, a young couple living their American dream in the Big Apple. As the book opens, they are discussing those first six months of sleep deprivation. As a mom of two. . .I can fully relate to both of these points. I think of my pre-baby life and how care-free and ego-centric it was. My after-baby life is much different (although I wouldn't trade it for anything).

Lost in that new-baby haze, John and Veronica are starting to drift apart, as so many couples do during those beginning months. On a bright, but chilly February morning, John decides to strap baby Clara into the Baby Bjorn after her first "sleep through the night" and head out to breakfast. He tells himself it's to give Veronica a chance to catch up on HER sleep, but he soon finds himself in a cab traveling through New York City, and eds up at the airport. Is it a coincidence that he has their passports with him?
